VOG intro. to Steve Kelley - (:20)

Here now to sketch out the rest of the event, to help draw us toward continued success, to paint a picture of our site business leaders is our Master of Ceremonies ... You know him as the entertaining and sometimes outrageous editorial cartoonist for the San Diego Union-Tribune. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome Steve Kelley.

Steve Kelley

Steve should be allowed a couple of minutes to say a few words of his own, if he wants - he should get the brochure and the data sheet that was given to me so that he has an overview of what is happening at the event.

Steve Kelley intro. to Business Group Presentation and intro. to J. R___

You’ve heard from three of the top Sony Electronics executives today - with a high level overview of Sony’s corporate and local business perspective. Very impressive! The first 25 years here in San Diego really has paved the way for this transformation you are undergoing - from just manufacturing - into a leading edge technology and business development center. As a consumer, I’m thrilled that so much of the really neat new products and technologies are being created right here at the Sony Technology Center in San Diego. This next part of SonyFest ‘97 is a chance for all of us here today - employees and interested consumers - to get a better idea of just what 4000 people, spread over 94 acres of beautiful San Diego county are really up to. Business leaders from six of the major business groups in San Diego are lined up to fill you in on some of the exciting details of what they’re doing and how they all interconnect. But before I do the introductions, I need to explain why I’m here. You all know what I do - I’m an editorial cartoonist. And, obviously, the Business Symposium Committee felt that with all these business leaders marching up to the podiums, there probably should be someone on hand to help keep things light. OK, why not - I’m up to the task. But, I thought, I’m more than just a glib talker - I’m an artist. And after years of creating caricatures of prominent names in the news, I thought I could provide more than just words for this event. So, I created a quick vision of each of our featured speakers. Oh, and by the way, I promise to keep these sketches out of the papers. Everyone ready? OK…

Representing DDS - Display Device - San Diego, is J___ R___, the Director of Manufacturing for the 17" Display Tube Line - and coincidentally - with Sony now for 17 years. Always ready to take on a new challenge, J__’s experience in engineering and manufacturing has contributed to his success as a manager, as well as helped him prepare for today’s first-ever Business Symposium. Here to talk about something that is near and dear to his heart -- a part the award winning Trinitron Television -- the cathode ray tube.

Steve Kelley intro. to J. F___

You know, I travel a lot these days, most of it by air. And it makes me feel a little bit better to know that Air Traffic Controllers have access to an ultra-high-resolution display - with more than four million pixels on a big square Trinitron - so that they can pick out my little blip from somebody else’s little blip. J___ F___, Director of Color Television and Display Systems Manufacturing - DSM, has been with Sony here in San Diego for 25 years. He has seen these technologies evolve and he is part of the original team here at the Sony Technology Center -San Diego. Here now, with the latest information on what’s going on in Bldgs. 3 and 5 – J___ F___.

Steve Kelley intro. to D. E___

There are some inventions that just can’t be overlooked. Inventions that have had a dramatic and profound impact on our society and our economy. Television certainly falls into that category. It would be a stretch to say that I remember the days before television, but I’m old enough to remember the days when color television was a brand new technology. And, don’t you think that for most people, the name Sony Trinitron is synonymous with television. It certainly seems to be the TV that every other TV aspires to be. And D___ E___, the Director of Engineering for Sony’s Television Business Group of America – TVA, has had a hand in the advancement of the quality of Sony TV’s and monitors for over 10 years, working for a number of Sony Divisions. D___ E___'s experience embodies the connectedness and synergy Sony is trying to create. So, let’s bring up D___ to talk televisions.

Steve Kelley intro. to G. M___

As is typical of any large organization, I have been noticing that Sony Technology Center - San Diego - or STC-SD - has a large number of acronyms. This "shorthand" is sort of like what I do. As an editorial cartoonist, I try to boil down the information at hand into the fewest critical parts. So, if you were to come up with the shortest possible name for the San Diego Sony site that develops and implements digital technology and media applications for set-top TV hardware and services, you would call it Digital Media of America -- or DMA. Wouldn’t you? To fill us in on the DSS direct-to-home satellite set-top box and WebTV Internet terminal is a man who has only been with the Sony family for a few months now, but got to know us while he was at DIRECTV. Here is the Senior Vice President for DMA, G___ M___.

Steve Kelley intro. to D. H___

Something I can’t live without is my computer. And one of the most important parts of my computer is the part I look at for many hours every day - the Computer Display. And from where I sit -- there ain’t no display like a Sony display. From Display Systems of America - DSA, we have it’s Director of Finance D__ H___ to talk strategy and status of design, development and distribution of display products. D__ has been with Sony for over nine years now - two years here in San Diego, after seven years in Miami at the Latin American Headquarters for Business & Professional Products. While he has done a little bit of everything, his primary responsibilities are in the financial area. D__ H___ of DSA.

Steve Kelley intro. to M. E___

You know, it’s really interesting how personal all of these technologies we’ve been hearing about are to me. I mean, really, where would I be without my computer screen and my television and my pager and my cell phone. Take pagers and cell phones, for example. Can you go anywhere these days without suddenly everyone in the room reaching for their pocket or their purse or their belt when something starts to ring, beep or chirp? (Can we set this up so Steve has a cell phone on the podium and ring it up during this bit?) Oh, excuse me - my phone. (Into the phone) Hello? No, I’m sorry, you have the wrong number. (Shake head, or some kind of shtick, then - to the audience) Our final speaker this morning before our break is M___ E___, Director of the Wireless Telecommunications Company - WTC. M___, you’re on. (Pick up phone) I’m just going to get that last call credited back.

Steve Kelley Segue to Break

I’m sure you are all ready for a break right about now. We’re going to reset the stage for our Panel Discussion, so you have 20 minutes starting from right now to get up, return a few pages, take a potty break, or grab a drink. Don’t go too far from the tent...you’ll want to hear the announcement about coming back to your seats. See you back here in 20 minutes - at (note the time).
